I've put out a message to various experts asking for feedback on your videos. Here's the responses from the first one, film-maker Ben Gee

Shadows 1 (church)

very good start with tilts, nice effects throughout, seems professional, like a real music video; cuts very good, suits music well, constant old film effect is very good, shadow idea suits it well; eyes in background very good; very high standard- similar to Latymer. fantastic for a two month project; nice ending

Shadows 2 (tea party)

nice fades and objects in opening; good simultaneous zoom and fade; intriguing imagery makes you think and poses questions; whole band on location very good. good effect on tea party; changing person and nice shadow; very smooth cuts; out of focus shots very good; use of lights very good.

Wicked little Girls

nice cuts, professional look; good fades, light used well, very good use of mix shots with big close ups and shared shot on screen; care in filming and edited very well; doubled up shots very nicely done; blur effect good; all good quality, no bad shots; cards at end make it look pro

Bicycle one

cuts a bit sudden; moving camera very good; good lipsynch; a bit jumpy. Nice location use, good performer, good range of shots

whres the iPod touch ! Have you seen the sesame st version? very good- but is it too much like the actual video/ very good cutting, nice effect with piano, good use of fx, good consistent idea, obviously worked on a lot

Everywhere (sven)

lighting excellent, cuts to band very good, nice glint on paint, wide shot on paint very good, use of blur and focus very good

Everywhere (Elliott)

ceiling lights shots good- all as above good plus blur start and flash effect, nice moving camera, good use of tricks within the shots, such as effects, jumps, movement;

mansion

authentic looking band; good start with preparation convention; like the quick cuts; don't get the funny faces- doesn't quite work, didn't understand the narrative

Overall, this selection is way above the usual standard that I see- not one of them has serious defects- all have little bits which could be tweaked, but no duffers!

Evaluation

These are the four questions which you need to address for the last 20 marks of the project, for evaluation. As with the film opening earlier in the year, these questions will each be accompanied by a task, which you must carry out and then post the outcome to your blog. All four should be completed by the end of Friday 19th March and must sit at the top of your blog in the order here. Some parts of the task will be done individually and some may be done with your group partners. If you are doing some individual work at home on the task, you may complete it over the weekend, but everything MUST be on all blogs by Sunday 21 March at 9 pm.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?
2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
4.How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?

For this task, you will do something very similar to the film opening; take nine frames from your video and put them into a grid. The nine frames need to represent the following features of your music video:

1. a shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals
2. a shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented
3. a shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre
4. a shot that shows an intertextual reference
5. a shot that demonstrates your use of camera
6. a shot that demonstrates your use of lighting
7. a shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene
8/9. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos

here is how Alex approached it:

For each of these nine shots, write a couple of sentences explaining how they fit the brief here.

You then need to take screengrabs from other (real) music videos and construct a second nine frame grid which you will use in parallel to your one on your blog. There must be at least THREE music videos which you have grabbed from.

Again for each of the nine frames, write a couple of sentences about how they meet the brief. Here is alex’s version:

This task is to be completed on Tuesday ready for feedback in Wednesday's lesson.

We also want you to take the panes of your digipack and set them alongside images from other album covers to show similarities and to take your advert and set it alongside an advert to show how you have used conventions. In each case, you will need to annotate your work.

This task is to be done individually.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

For this, we want you to take your finished video and grab some stills from it and put them on a document alongside grabs from your digipack and advert and to annotate the document to show how they all go together. This should be done in lesson time on Thursday and may be done as a group.

3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

For this task, we want you to consider four stages of feedback

1. class and teacher feedback on your initial treatment
2. rough cut- class feedback and teacher feedback
3. class feedback on your digipack roughs
4. final version of everything- class feedback and feedback from anyone else

For 1. You need to have a paragraph which notes what people said at that stage and illustrates changes you made

for 2. You need a paragraph about what the class said and what you changed as a consequence- with screengrabs to illustrate

for 3. you need a paragraph on what was said and grabs of your sketches/ early drafts (even if already on the blog, link to them)

for 4. again note down any responses you get.

This task may be done as a group in Thursday's session.

4.How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

For this final task, you are to do the same as for the film opening: have a photo of each person with the technology used and a screengrab of each website/program used as part of the project: facebook, Myspace, blogger, youtube, Final cut, etc

This task may be done individually or as a group.

Please note that for any group task, you will be credited for your contribution to it.

If you are feeling really adventurous, construct a prezi like this one, and put all your four tasks into it. A good prezi has a strong chance of top marks.

One production has a professional crew with the very latest and best professional video making kit in order to make a promo for British alternative rock band FIGHTSTAR.

While the other production, a music video for HAR MAR SUPERSTAR, is limited to using a range of new consumer HD camcorders and editing software.

NINJA TUNES VIDEOS

The NINJA TUNES label was started in London in 1990, by the DJ duo Coldcut who helped pioneer what became known as trip-hop. Primarily, the Ninja Tune imprint was a way to release music of a more underground nature, free from the restraints of major labels.

Along with the music release, the record label would commission a low budget and in most cases experimental music video. Check them out here.

Won the award for Best Editing Video Musique in France in 1998.
This is one of the very early examples of VJing, the images and sounds of circular saws, chopping axes and chainsaws are edited together to produce the music track and video.

QUESTION: Do you have the edit pre-constructed in your head before filming?

Chris Cunningham: Pretty much. I'd say it ends up that 60% are shots that are designed to go in one specific place and won't go anywhere else. But the other 40% are accidents or tangents you go off on. That ratio is determined by the limited amount of time you have. I'm not sure I'd change that because you have to be surprised by stuff, else it's no fun.

"So much you are going to have to do (in the edit) is already laid down for you (in the music track)"

Criteria for a top video mark

Create an effective music promo which maintains its success for the duration of the full video.

Work collaboratively as a group, contributing to all aspects of the production, including planning, preparation, organisation, shooting and editing.

Complete all tasks on schedule, reflecting on the feedback from your peers.

Use the invoice system to get members of other groups to help you out.

Music video must include substantial lipsynch and mix performance and concept

NB you do not have to perform in a video.

Music video must be effective part of a package with digipack and magazine ad.

For highest marks, technical expertise and creativity will go together with an appropriate set of choices for the music and artist.

Individual contribution, including the blog, will determine individual marks from the overall project.

Where should you be by now with your blog?

Most blogs are now looking up to date and really good! This is what should be on your blog:

1. Videos from the first session (dancing figures and girls in barn) + an explanation of the activities and what you think you learned from them
2. A favourite video of yours embedded and comments on what you find interesting about it
3. The shapes music video activity and commentary on what it was about and what you learnt from doing it
4. The 'karaoke' video and a description of the activity, plus some thoughts on what you gained from doing it
5. Embedded videos from last year's students and comments on strengths/weaknesses of the work
6. ancillary task practice work and writing about it, plus examples of real covers/digipaks
7. Your personal statement
8. your checklist of things for the unit which will enable you to make a good video and get high marks

If you were away for a particular activity, you should state this on your blog. Make up for being away by writing more about some of the other tasks.

There will be a lot more to go on the blog this week

The Music Video Ancillary Tasks Practise Session

The music video is worth 40 marks.
In addition, you will complete two further tasks, worth 10 marks each; these are: a digipak for the release of the album by the artist and a magazine advert for the digipak.

You will be given one of the above music tracks.

1. Briefly research the song and artist.
Embed the actual music video to your blog with links to the various artist websites.
Also post any logos or other images that might influence your design.

2. Using PHOTOSHOP and the TEMPLATES ON FLICKR (outside + inside) produce a promotional pack of a Digipak and magazine advert for the release of the song.

3. Use the Photoshop INTERNATIONAL A4 PAPER PRESET for the magazine advert.

4. You need to consider the GENRE, VISUAL STYLE and TARGET AUDIENCE for the promotion.

5.  Upload screengrabs of the work in progress to your blog with discussion of your decisions.

6. Upload FINISHED digipak and magazine advert to your BLOG and FLICKR.

The Digipak
A digipak is a 'special edition' of the album; it might include a second disk of extra tracks or a DVD of 'behind-the-scenes' material, a booklet or something else.

What you have to do is consider what you would want to release for your particular artist, given the target audience.

The digipak you produce needs to be at least four panes - in other words outside front and back and double spread inside.

It needs a design and it needs the other features you expect from a CD release:

★ Institutional info on record label
★ Artist / Band logo and image
★ Track-list
★ Sleeve notes

You need to plan carefully how it will relate to the video you have made to ensure a 'brand identity'.

The Magazine Advert
Then the advert should be set up as it would appear in a magazine, probably a music magazine; for this you will need to research how CDs and digipaks are advertised in such magazines and consider the image, the layout, etc.

Again it needs you to be able to demonstrate consistency with the other elements and/or with the genre.

This site gives you access to current and more off-beat music video projects.

Tuesday morning task: previous student videos

Go to this playlist on youtube. Each pair will be allocated particular sets of videos to look at. Please ONLY look at those you are allocated as you will be required to report back on them.

Watch the videos you are allocated and choose examples which you would shortlist for any or all of the following categories:

Best band performance
Best male vocal
Best female vocal
Best use of location
Best camerawork
Best editing
Most innovative concept

Embed the ones you wish to nominate on your blog and write some brief notes on what impressed you about them. You don't have to find one for every category and you can nominate a video more than once.

Also choose one for the 'Wooden Spoon award' which you think is particularly poor and from which lessons could be learnt about what NOT to do.

In the second session, we will look at extracts from the videos you have shortlisted together and decide our 'winners'. At this stage you will be asked to explain your choices.

SHAPES MUSIC VIDEO TASK:  
Produce an animated music video with shapes created in Photoshop.

1. Use the default shapes or download new shapes from http://myphotoshopbrushes.com/custom_shapes

2. Open Photoshop and save project as “shapes MASTER”

3. Select the Background layer in the layer palette. 
Choose a colour for the background and fill it with the Paint Bucket Tool.

4. New Layer – click on the “New Layer” button at the base of the layer palette. Notice the layer is transparent – all the shapes have to be on a transparent layer.

5. Select the Shape Tool and create a new shape. Click on the colour in the layer palette to change it.

6. Create more shapes on new layers.

7. Isolate individual layer to export. Click on the layer palette’s “eyes” to switch off the other layers.

8. Main Menu > File > Save For Web & Devices. Preset > PNG-24 > click the “Transparency” box.
 Click Save. 
Create folder > “Shapes” > Name shape > Save

9. Save all shapes.

10. In Final Cut, import “Shapes” folder and edit the Photoshop shapes to the music track.

More Than One Way - Kano helps to promote diplomas

Kano, a “grime” star, has produced a new song and video which the government is using to promote diplomas.

Students on creative and media diplomas helped to film the music video, while those on hair and beauty courses worked in make-up, and construction pupils helped to build the set.

Music Video 2010

Over the next few weeks, you will undertake the A2 music video and print promo materials task.

You will be working in a group of 2 or 3 as selected by the teachers and you will make a package of materials for an artist/band from a selection provided by us. This task requires a highly professional approach and systematic record keeping throughout. you will be marked on your contribution to the work of the group.

Research and Planning 20 marks (teacher observation and evidence on the blog)
Construction 60 marks (your contribution to the products- video (40), digipack(10) and magazine ad(10))
Evaluation 20 marks (from a series of four questions related to the project as a whole)

The video MUST include lipsynch and a mixture of performance and other material.

You will go through a number of stages which must all be recorded and evidenced on your blog.

1. Preparatory exercises on Final Cut: cutting and ordering footage to music; adding effects and transitions; synching existing footage; shooting and editing a 'karaoke' video; shooting a video as a class

2. research work: looking at a range of music videos and analysing them; examining the strengths and weaknesses of old student work

3. Pitching for one of the selection of tracks provided; planning the video and producing an animatic; taking test and recce shots, making a moodboard and a timeline

4. Shooting and editing the video and producing a rough cut and final versions by the deadlines

5. giving feedback to other groups on their ideas, animatics and rough cuts and taking feedback on your own; acting upon it.

6. researching album covers and digipacks and magazine ads for releases and showing evidence of your research

7. planning and making the print products by the deadlines.

8. Evaluating your work using the framework questions and tasks in digital format.

Schedule:
Preparatory tasks (Jan 5-15)
Research work; set music choices, piching and early planning (Jan 18-22)
Planning, test shots, animatic, timeline, moodboard, draft print products (Jan 25-Feb 5)
Shooting (feb 8-12) NB we hope to use the Junction stage
Editing (Feb 22-26- rough cut due on 26th)
Final version of video complete Tue 9 mar; final print work Thur 11 march
Evaluation work Mar 12-19

Task 1: This week, you need to start the process by uploading your videos to youtube and embedding them on your blog.

for each video, you need to write about what you did for the task and what you think you learned from it. include any peer feedback comments.

Task 2: pick a music video you really like and embed a copy of it on the blog. Write about the features of it which you find interesting, such as camerawork, editing, performance, concept.

Work should all be complete by 9pm Sunday 10th Jan.
